The International Maritime Union (I.M.U.) established
in 1922 and plays a dymanic role with continuous and significant
presence to the shipping Industry of our country for about
80 years.
The establishment of I.M.U. in 1922 was a necessity in
order to assist the Authorities for the purpose of creating
a modern port which up to now had no any berthing places
and port services offered were in a primitive situation.
Piraeus port was a place "to be avoided" by the shipping
companies.
At that time joined efforts of I.M.U. Greek Ship Owners
Association as well as Chambers of Commerce and with the
assistance of Mr Perikles Callimasiotis acting as the "Head
of the Port Committee" an autonomous organization was formed
to be transformed in 1930 as ther Piraeus Port organization
(P.P.O.).
Members of I.M.U. is the majority of the shipping companies
representing liner shipping companies as well as tramped
ones, and the cruise shipping liner companies, thus contribute
to more than 80% to the income of the Piraeus Port budget.
The presense if I.M.U. in Piraeus is strong in cargo and
passenger sectors and his elaborating power has played a
significant role to the continuous increase of the cargo
and passenger traffic, increased the productivity of port
services, supported new investments planned by the Authorities.
In our days Piraeus is considered as one of the main Meditteranean
Ports and used by almost all mayor shipping liner companies.
International Maritime Union is member of the country's
various Chambers as well as to the International Organizations
of FONASBA and ECASBA.
